Pedro Almodóvar&#8217;s The Room Next Door, starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, wins the Golden Lion for Best Film at the 81st Venice International Film Festival!
This is Almodóvar’s first US production and first English-language feature film and WSF&#8217;s Joshua Blum &amp; Han West served as Executive Producers in New York. Washington Square Films served as the NY production company.
The Room Next Door follows the story of a very imperfect mother and a spiteful daughter separated by a serious misunderstanding. Between them, another woman, Ingrid (Julianne Moore), the mother’s friend, is the keeper of their pain and bitterness. Martha, the mother (played by Tilda Swinton), is a war reporter and Ingrid an auto-fictional novelist. The film addresses the endless cruelty of war, the very different ways in which the two female authors approach and write about reality, death, friendship, and sexual pleasure as the best allies in the fight against horror.
The film is scheduled to open theatrically in New York City and Los Angeles on December 20, 2024, followed by a limited release in select US cities on Christmas Day, and a January 2025 wide US release.

In his directorial debut, Nnamdi Asomugha’s The Knife tells the story of Chris (Nnamdi Asomugha), who’s sole want is to carve a promising future for his beloved wife Alex (Aja Naomi King) and their two girls; a young family chasing the American Dream. One fateful night, Chris’ entire world is shaken to its core as a stranger mysteriously shows up in their humble abode. Distressed by the events of the night and the revelations seemingly at every turn, the family must also contend with the steadfast Detective Carlsen (Melissa Leo) who’s eager to solve the mystery of their intrusion. Washington Square Films has signed director<a href="https://wsfilms.com/directors/alex-ogus"> Alex Ogus</a> for commercial representation. His work has earned global award recognition, including Cannes Lions, Clio Awards, One Show Awards and Bessie Awards. His client list included AMEX, McDonald’s, Nestle, Advil, TurboTax, Pfizer and Snickers. Recently, Ogus helmed the music video “Gonna Be You” for 80 for Brady featuring Dolly Parton, Belinda Carlisle, Cyndi Lauper and Gloria Estefan.
Jonathan Schwartz, director of marketing and sales/managing director of NY-based Washington Square Films, said, “Alex understands how to create great comedy using wonderful visuals, great performances and a perfect sense of timing.  His work has a richness that makes you laugh and also makes you want to watch it again.”
Ogus added, “The team at Washington Square Films is made up of truly down-to-earth, real people, but what sets them apart is their vision for the future of the industry and their dedication to the careers of their directors. I’ve always had a lot of my work come out of New York and their strong presence in the city makes this such a great fit.”
Ogus was drawn to filmmaking at an early age, transitioning from amateur comic book writing and illustration to filmmaking class while growing up in Toronto. After going to film school, he funded his initial directorial reel by creating and distributing a salad dressing based on a coveted family recipe. His creativity quickly splashed over from the salad bowl to the screen, striking literal commercial gold with one of his earliest spots for The Fight Network going on to earn top awards, including four Cannes Gold Lions. Following this powerful entry into the commercial directing scene, he started helming spots across the globe, shooting campaigns in Paris, London, Moscow and Zurich, while continuing to grow his body of work in the U.S. Prior to Washington Square Films, Ogus was represented in the U.S. by CoMPANY Films.
Outside of commercials, Ogus directed the 2022 short ICE, which follows a young Latina who comes home only to find that her mother has been taken by immigration. The film recently earned a Remi Award from the Worldfest-Houston International Film Festival.

The Harder They Come was also nominated for two Drama Desk Awards and four Lucille Lortel Awards, making it the most nominated Off-Broadway Musical of the season.

Everyone at Washington Square Films extends heartfelt congratulations to Suzan-Lori Parks for her astounding achievement, selected as one of <a href="https://time.com/collection/100-most-influential-people-2023/6269454/suzan-lori-parks/">Time Magazine&#8217;s 100 Most Influential People of 2023</a>. SLP penned the musical adaptation of the 1972 film The Harder They Come that debuted this February, executive produced by our own Joshua Blum and Bruce Miller, and recent additions Carmelo Anthony and Asani Swan. The playwright phenom won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama for her 2001 smash hit Topdog/Underdog, making her the first African-American woman to achieve the honor. She is currently performing in her pandemic-era piece Plays for the Plague Year.

Erik brings a distinct ability to elicit authentic performances in his work, from both actors and real people. His talent for creating comfortable environments that allow actors to interact with the camera as an additional character has also traversed into the digital realm, navigating COVID-spurred production challenges by filming with skeleton crews and virtual personnel on imperative projects. His ads span top brands like Universal Orlando, Spectrum, Publix, Visit Florida, and Hertz, among numerous others. Having previously worked in a freelance capacity with Washington Square Films for a number of years, he officially joins the company’s directorial roster with a number of projects already in production.

Congratulations to our friend and client Kerry Washington for being featured on the cover of TIME Magazine’s ‘Women of the Year’ issue.

Kerry is recognized for her work both on and off-screen as an actor, producer, director, and activist.  She is, of course, well known for playing the iconic Olivia Pope on Scandal, as well as for producing and starring in Little Fires Everywhere and the Broadway and Netflix productions of American Son under her Simpson Street production company. Washington has been involved with many social and political causes, including her service on President Obama’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities. In 2013, Washington was honored with the NAACP President’s Award, recognizing her special achievements in furthering the cause of civil rights and public service. In 2014, Time magazine included Washington on its annual Time 100 list of the Most Influential People in the World. She received the GLAAD Media Vanguard Award in 2015 and the ACLU Bill of Rights Award in 2016. She was a co-chair of Mrs. Obama&#8217;s When We All Vote campaign and is the Founder of Influence Change, a strategic initiative that partners with high impact, non profit organizations to increase voter turnout. She is also a co-chair of the Black Voices for Black Justice Fund, an organization dedicated to funding and amplifying the voices of Black leaders who are helping build a more equitable America. In 2021, Washington partnered with the Movement Voter Project to launch a Cohort of 10 grassroots organizations to provide them with resources and storytelling support to scale their impact as they advocate for an equitable democracy.

Animated action thriller Cryptozoo, co-produced by Washington Square Films and Low Spark Films and directed by Dash Shaw and Jane Samborski, will be available in theaters and on TVOD starting this Saturday, August 21.

The 95 minute fantasy film, which features the voices of Michael Cera, <a href="https://wsfilms.com/directors/spielbergs">Alex Karpovsky</a> and Grace Zabriskie, follows a group of Cryptozookeepers trying to capture a dream-eating hybrid creature of legend named Baku. They begin to wonder if they should display these rare beats or keep them hidden and unknown. 
Cryptozoo was presented at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and won the Sundance NEXT Innovator Award presented by Adobe before being sold to Magnolia Pictures for distribution.

Cryptozoo took flight at the virtual 2021 Sundance Film Festival, held Thursday, January 28 through Wednesday, February 3.
Military brat Lauren spent her childhood nights in a nightmarish state, until a mythical baku came to eat her dreams, releasing her from nocturnal torment. Lauren decides to dedicate her life to rescuing and sheltering cryptids from those who seek to exploit them, so she becomes a cryptozookeeper. But when Lauren’s and Amber’s paths cross, Lauren begins to wonder if displaying these rare beasts in confinement is better than enabling these mythical creatures to remain hidden and unknown
Co-produced by Washington Square Films and Low Spark Films, the film was written and directed by filmmaker/animator, Dash Shaw, who also helmed the festival darling My Entire High School School Sinking Into The Sea (2016). Shaw won the NEXT Innovator Prize presented by Adobe for the film, rapidly sold to Magnolia Pictures for distribution.

Congratulations to our own roster director <a href="https://wsfilms.com/directors/braden-king">Braden King</a>&#8211;Strand Releasing has acquired North American rights to his Sundance 2020 selection The Evening Hour. We&#8217;re excited for audiences to get to experience this poignant crime drama with a tentative Spring release. Based on the novel by Carter Sickels and screen written by Elizabeth Palmore, the Kentucky-based film authentically spotlights the isolated culture of Appalachia and its strong-willed people, alongside their struggles under the yoke of the coal-mining industry and the threat of drug addiction.

WSF director <a href="https://wsfilms.com/directors/jakob-strom">Jakob Ström</a> helmed the COVID-19-aware ad for EXTRA Gum, “New Friend Request,” spotlighting examples of the ‘friend request’ between sisters staying home. Shot locally near where Jakob resides in Sweden, where the pandemic has been impressively contained, the ad features two actual sisters to enhance the mutual on-camera chemistry.

Where a scrolling screen may preoccupy the hours of one sibling, the other won’t let her efforts to hang out deter her that easily. Swiping her gum, she drafts her own “friend request” on a wrapper, sparking a small moment with big impact at a time when most friends sit on the other side of a video chat or phone call.

Washington Square Films has signed <a href="https://wsfilms.com/directors/jakob-strom">Jakob Ström</a> for U.S. representation. A short film, commercial and music video director with decades of industry experience, Jakob Ström’s natural talent for uncovering humanity and genuine emotion across all genres can be seen in his cinematic work for brands including CARE, Suntrust Foundation and LIDL, among others.

His 2015 short film “Dear Daddy” for CARE Norway&#8211;an organization advocating for women’s rights across the globe&#8211;went viral, taking in over 400 million views worldwide for its raw, harrowing look into the trauma of domestic abuse and sexual assault hiding in plain sight. The short, which was translated into 10 languages, won several international awards, including a Gold and Silver Lion in Cannes, a Grand Prix at the New York Festival, a D&amp;AD White Pencil, a Silver CLIO Award, two Grand Prix Awards and one Gold Award at the CRESTA Awards, one Silver and two Gold Awards at the London International Awards, and one Gold and one Silver Eurobest Award.&#8221;
